To celebrate twenty years of Detachable Drops at Kiki McDonough, we are launching twenty pairs of spectacular Special Edition Drops in a variety of colours and cuts.
Pioneered by Kiki twenty years ago, the Detachable Drops collection champions versatility and individuality. As jewellery tells a story, each pair of drops can represent something sentimental or mark an occasion, and our wide selection of designs offers something for everyone. To find out more about the launch, we sat down with our design team to discuss the milestone anniversary.
Detachable Drops have been a bestseller for two decades, why do you think this is?
Kiki started the Detachable Drops collection twenty years ago as a versatile jewellery option for the sociable working woman. Kiki wanted to design the perfect day-to-night earrings, inspired by the women who would go straight from the office to dinner and drinks, their post-work ritual of quickly re-applying their make-up in the office bathroom elevated by adding a fun pair of drops to their work-appropriate diamond hoops. Every year we add new drops to this collection, so there is something for everyone, which is why it has remained so popular.
How were the gemstones for this Special Edition collection selected?
Selecting gemstones with exquisite cuts and striking colours is what Kiki McDonough is known for. We wanted to include a variety of shapes and colours in this Special Editions collection to showcase the variety of nature’s treasured creations, with ballet-pink morganite contrasted with deep blue iolite and summery yellow beryl. Kiki meticulously selects these stones from our trusted stone suppliers, and she likens the joyful process to ‘selecting sweets in a sweet shop.’
What is your advice for someone wanting to purchase their first pair of Detachable Drops?
The amazing thing about this collection is how incredibly versatile it is. If you are wanting to start your Detachable Drops collection, first choose your Kiki Hoops in either 18ct white or yellow gold via our hoop and drop builder. We have a wide variety of gemstones in our Detachable Drops collection so choosing your favourite colour and shape is a great place to start. For a touch of glamour, choose drops with a diamond halo or diamond accents. Those who love sentimental jewellery can look to our selection of motif drops including seashells, love hearts and maple leaves, so you can choose a design that speaks to you and immortalise a memory in 18ct gold. To elevate any party look, we have a variety of occasion earrings including our Special Editions drops with are made using rare and specially sourced gemstones.
Are these designs repeatable?
The gemstones in this Special Editions collection are all specially sourced so some may be hard to find again.
