Can you tell us a little more about yourself and what inspired you to get into acting and producing…
I was inspired as a teenager by Shakespeare, honestly, that sounds corny but I was a 14 year old living up a mountain in rural Spain and suddenly discovered this whole other ‘language’ and world, I put on A Midsummer Night’s Dream with friends and played Hermia and that was it, I was hooked. After that I went off to Drama school in London and have been acting ever since…Producing happened rather organically, I started to create material and the best way to get it made is to do it oneself, I also realised I loved putting the jigsaw puzzle together and finding all the pieces, story, director, finance, crew etc. I think producing is a natural instinct for many women as we have to use so many different parts of our brain all at once-juggling family, work, play-sometimes I feel like making a movie is a holiday-especially if I am only acting in it!!!
What have you found the biggest challenges to be…
My biggest challenge is always TIME. Having enough time to do everything I want to, and giving every part of my life, and everyone in it the attention they deserve. Managing it well and also finding some quiet for my own sanity.
What 3 words would you use to describe yourself…
Vulnerable, strong and a little ditsy.. at times
What makes you feel powerful…
Surviving, having experienced really tough times and getting through them, building on that strength. As Rainer Maria Rilke said ‘Let me not squander this moment of my despair’
What advice would you give your younger self…
Dare to fail, life is today, don’t wait for tomorrow and wear sunscreen.
What are your greatest sources of inspiration…
Comedy. Finding the humour in the ridiculousness of life. Being able to laugh at the situations I have found myself in, and use them as material in work and expression.
What best describes your style
Anything goes! Vintage vintage vintage, I love a challenge, nothing excites me more than finding something unwearable, slipping it on with a pair of very high heels, trying to make it work and failing fabulously!
You split your time between LA and London which is your favourite…
You have just hit on the one question that if answered could simplify my life enormously, I have been trying to figure this out for years and am still no closer. I arrive in London and walk into my apartment and feel like I never left and that I never want to…then it gets a little cold and grey and I go back to LA and feel the exact same thing…I have been trying to make up my mind for years. I LOVE them both and feel so grateful I get to spend time in both.
What's next for you…
Oooh so much! I have just wrapped on a movie that I have produced and also act in, directed by my partner Danny Huston. It’s been a crazy ride, shooting all over the world, toddler in toe…we have been gypsies for the best part of a year. I am now back in LA for a while where I am excitedly filming Tea With Rosie and prepping another film I am producing in September. And of course trying to make sure I get home to cook dinner every night!!
